Following someone who does not have a follow button
Just figured this out - to follow someone who does not have a follow button on their blog:-
- copy the url of their blog
- go to your dashboard
- at the bottom of your reading list click add
- paste the url in there
- choose follow publicly (or annon)
- click next - done

Playing with linking to another spot in my blog
Went to the heading of a post, clicked on the heading - which gave me the full url in my address bar, not just the blog's url.
Then went to New Post and typed this text, put in the word that I wanted to use to link to my post, highlighted it, clicked 'link' at the top of the box. Pasted the url in the place it asked for me to.
And done - I hope, now clicking on Publish Post

A caring story - in 15 minutes
This little story took 5 minutes to plan, 5 minutes to photograph and 5 minutes to create and narrate.
Make sure you save as 320 x 240 if you want to use on blogger. Save a better quality one too.

MeL student Blogs
Well I've just spent a few (quite a few) hours reading the blogs of my Managing eLearning students and I have to say - what an insightful bunch. On the whole they are blogging in very good ways - often, reflectively and through a lens of teaching and learning application. Most are discussing their own experiences - frustrations, accomplishments and everything in between - with the tools, and then exploring how these tools can be used in a classroom. There are many honest comments about the complexities and demands of the course and there is much evidence of growth and persistence.
There are a few students about whom I am worried - little or no blogging will make it very difficult for them to write a synopsis that will pass. I will try to make contact with each of these people early this week.
There is a difference in this context for me, however. As a teacher of adults the responsibility is not mine but theirs, I can try to make things engaging and informative be as available as I can, but in the end it is up to them to manage their own learning and seek help if they are struggling. So very different to teaching children.

Week 4 tutorial
What did I learn last night
1. Don't tell an emotive story when you are sick, tired and rushed - I missed important elements and probably didn't get across the message that I wanted to. Was a spur of the moment decision to share and I'm not sure that the timing was right for me or for the students. Perhaps I'll recap next week.
2. Yes, it is a gamble trusting that others will care for my 'stuff' - someone broke one of my bassburger speakers by forcing it open instead of twisting it. Now it doesn't stay closed - hoping that is still works. I'm sure it was an accident but it makes me sad.
3. I still get that rewarding buzz when I help someone learn something new - even an adult. I worked with Heather on embeding a YouTube clip in her Weebly. Never actually used a Weebly so it was a good feeling to be able to figure it out - and an even better feeling to see how pumped Heather was that she had persisted, sought help and made it happen after her initial frustration. That's the feeling that I get from teaching kids and it is satisfying to know it is still there when teaching adults.

Commenting on my blog

I love to have comments left on my blog.
I do have the comments set to be moderated before they are published, which means that you won't see your comment when you first make it.
This is a useful feature for use with kids as it means you can ensure no inappropriate comments appear on your blog.
Of course, you are not why I have it set like that; it is just because I was playing.

Angry birds
I know that this is a game that many educators are using - maths, physics, all kinds of learning - but I am still just having fun. Turns out I have a bit of a competative streak and am having trouble stopping. Have been doing lots of thinking about angles, force, projection, inertia and other tricky stuff while having fun. For those of you who are interested, I'm up to level 21 in poached eggs and a bit stuck. I have to go back and replay the earlier levels I think so that I can get some of the golden eggs I should have been looking for along he way!! Ah frustration. OK and the iPod turns the game off if you leave it for too long to post a comment on your blog without pausing. 
The other app in my picture (snipping tool) is a fabulous free app that shows how to sign common words in Auslan - it is wonderful and I'm using it to learn some basic signlanguge.

Trouble posting a comment
Hi,
I was having trouble posting comments on the blogs of those (many) I follow. I went to blogger help and found a thread about a recent issue with blogger and although it was a bit different to the problem I was having (not appearing as signed in even tho I was) I gave their solution a try... AND it worked!
So if you seem to be unable to post a comment because you are not showing a signed in profile when you are indeed logged in - try this. Go to tools in your internet browser and delete the cookies. Then sign back in to google/blogger.
Hope this helps someone - I was feeling very frustrated and said some mean things to my computer, guess I'll have to apologise!

Olivia knows how to use a photo to make your own background
Last week someone asked about using a photo to make a personalised background for blogger. I have just read Olivia's blog and she knows how to do it. Maybe you could ask her for some tips if this is something you want to do?

Week 1 2011
Last night was our first class for 2011 and it was good to see some old faces and meet some new students - another 66 names to remember!
I feel that we got off to a good start. Most students have set up their blog and posted the address to the wiki. And many have begun blogging, so they are well on the way.
Most students also chose a partner and a theory/reading to consider, disect and discuss. I had a brain snap at one point and, after talking about expert jigsaws, probably confused some people (including myself) by saying that one person from each pair was to explore one theory/reading. Of course, the idea is for each PAIR to share a theory/reading and discuss it using the wiki. I've emailed everyone to, hopefully, clear that up.
